Art therapy works directly with image, symbol, material, and metaphor — all of which carry cultural meaning that varies enormously across the communities a clinician serves. A directive, a material choice, or an interpretation that feels neutral to one clinician can carry an entirely different weight for a client from a different cultural background, and an art therapist who is not actively attending to this can unintentionally pathologize normal cultural expression, misread a symbol, or extract a practice from a tradition it does not belong to. This course examines multicultural competency as an ethical obligation and an active, ongoing practice rather than a credential to be checked off. The first module covers the foundations of cultural humility in art therapy — the clinician's own cultural lens, materials and symbols across cultures, and the difference between respectful cultural integration and appropriation. The second module applies this foundation to assessment practices and to structural and business-practice considerations — access, equity, and boundaries across cultural difference. The third module works through applied case studies covering common multicultural dilemmas in art therapy practice and closes with a structured ethical decision-making model.
